KAPONGA.

(Freni Our Own Correspondent). WINTRY WEATHER. Eixtremely boisterous weather was experienced here throughout Wednesday, a north-westerly gale, accompanied by heavy, driving showers being th© order of the day. An idea of the force of the wind may be gathered from the fact that a spring cart, left for repairs dn front of Mr W. J. Noonan’s business premises, was b'own across the street, making a tail-on course for a stationary motor-car on the opposite side. Mr Noonan’s promptness in giving chase anj swinging the shafts round on the roadway averted a collision which, would certainly have resulted in much damage to th© car. The broadside impact was not serious. The Kaupokonui stream, skirting the township, has, by the recent heavy rains, been transformed from a rippling rill to a roaring torrent. The general local opinion is that the drought lias broken ! QUEEN CARNIVAL. The status of parties in the Bowling Club’s carnival, as indicated by the flags, shows Ireland in the lead and Scotland second. It is understood that England, in third place, will leave the others standing on Monday or Tuesday. House parties seem to b© tlie most popular and prolific means of votecatching, and of these there are three more in sight. As is usual with queen carnivals, the fortunes of the candiadtes are expected to fluctuate during the hist week of the contest. All parties have something “up their sleeves,” and are “keeping dark.” GENERAL. Mr H. Walsh has just completed the formation and part metalling of 12 chains of the Old Cemetery Road. The metalling: of the worst parts-—the ends and two fillings will minimise the chances of quagmires during the coming winter.

The " overturning of a five-seater Jewett car near the intersection of tlie Rowan and Stratford Roads on Tuesday afternoon might easily have been attended bv serious consequences. Tlie occupants, three young fellows engaged in canvassing the district, were uninjured. hut the car was damaged to the extent of about £2O. Failure of the brakes during the op?ration of turning tlie car on a steep inclin© was the cause of the mishap, necessitating a. four-mile tow to Kaponga for repairs. A harvest festival service is to 1>? conducted in the Presbyterian Church next Sunday, and in connection therewith a sale of produce will take place in the Oddfellows’ Hall *on Monday evening. ELECTRIC SUPPLY.

The engineer has reported to the works committee of the Kaponga Town Board that h© has cleaned the burned turbine and governors on fly-wheel and will have them painted, after which they will lie as good as before- the fir©. An/attempt has been made, after temporary repairs to the damaged exciter had. been effected, to obtain a small supply of power from the damaged generator. The engineer anticipated that, after re-win’ ng certain of the field coils, a small supply, up to 20 k.w., or one-sixth of the plant’s original capacity,, could he obtained. Any surge of current, however, would effect a total burn-out of the machine, which, could therefore only be used when; subject to the strictest supervision. The hoard would, however, find this margin valuable in maintaining its .supply at the commencement of next season .should the new plant not be in place. He had p'uc-ed on order the necessary instruments. gauges, etc., to enable the turbine and governors to be used. The erection of lines was to he continued, .-sixty poles on order were expected shortlv, when Lower Dutliie Road, Upper Manga:vhero and Lower Mnnaia would he completed and ready for service at. tlie opening of the next milking season.
