NORMANBY.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

TOWN BOARD

At the adjourned ordinary meeting of the Normanby Town Board, there were present Commissioners C'. JPreston (chairman), C. Coad, T. Lloyd, A. Hills, andi P. Leydon. A ■ letter was received from Mrs. E’. Whyte asking for repairs to be done to Browne Street in front of her residence. The matter was left in the hands of the works committee, with power to act. The District Engineer of Railways wrote drawing the board’s _ attention to the menace to the travelling public through cattle being allowed to graze on the streets of the township and stating that he proposed to call on the chairman in connection with the matter. It was resolved that the chairman and Commissioner Coad meet the engineer on his arrival. Messrs A. Powell and Howe and Howe-Giles applied for renewals of their billiard saloon licenses, and these were granted under the usual conditions. Several residents are to be given notice to trim hedges and grub gorse opposite their properties. The new agreement between the Hawera County Council and the Nornianbv Town Board was read, and after discussion it was agreed to cancel the old agreement drawn up in 1905 and adopt the new agreement as read. ■ CEMETERY BOARD. Since coming into office the present Cemetery Board has adopted a progressive* policy in connection with the upkeep of the cemetery. The plot round the cairn in memory of old soldiers has been dug and resown in grass. In this direction the board received assistance from the Department of Internal Affairs. The footpaths and other portions have been mowed. The greatest difficulty experienced has been with several graves which have been allowed to get into a dilapidated condition. The board has decided to write to relatives of those buried asking them to take steps to have the graves tidied up. It is hoped that the board’s wishes will be acceded to, for the cemetery will then be a credit to all concerned.
