BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS,

(From Our Own Correspondent.)' Tlhe inontihly uneeiting of the Eitiham Borougih Council was held last evening, the Mayor, Mr. Ira J. Bridget, presiding. There were also .present: Qrs. Kemp, McKay, Lewis, Thomas, McWhirter, Ricketts, Rigg and Nairn. line secretary of the Hawera. ftospiital Board wrote submitting Hie annual assessment for 1926, amounting to £6lO, sallowing an increase over lash year’s assessment of £SO. llhe Mayor said that there was nothing left but for the Council to. agree to the assessment and pay the amount allocated. Nevertheless the time was opportune .to renew the application for. a motor ambulance to be stationed at Eiltbam. He stated that the JBltham Borough were paying approximately £4OOO towards the upkeep of the hospital. The district-' was a considerable distance from Hawera, and considering the la.rge number of oases that were received: from Eltliam, .some of them very urgent, there .should be a light ambulance stationed at Eltham. On. tlhe last occasion when an application was made it was istated in reply that considering the small number of times .the anlbulanoe was requared in Eltham the installation was not warranted. Or. Thomas supported . the Mayor.? He considered a. light motor ambulance could be procured for about £3OO, which, would .serve the town and district. He then moved that the Council renew its application for an ambulanoe to be permanency stationed at Etham. Or. MoWihirter seconded the motion and endorsed the remarks of the Mayor and Or. Thomas. The motion was then put and carried unanimously. Messrs T. B. 'Crump and W. .O. v Clement., the council’s representatives W' oil the Egmont National Bark Board, reported on the work of the committee during the year. The total revenue received was approximately £650 and constituted a. record year. The resort was becoming more popular each year. Mr* Grump, who< was present at Hie meeting, stated that the committee contemplated erecting a new hostel, costing approximately £IO,OOO in the near future. It was decided, on the motion of the Mayor, seconded, by Or. Rigg, that Messrs Crump and Clement ibe reappointed as the council’s rep resent actives, and, on the motion of Or. Bu-ke) reported that 403 head of stock had been slaughtered during the month, and five head, were condemned. COMMITTEE REPORTS. Committee reports, as under, were adopted:— Finance.—That the gasworks department be authorised to : nstal gas cookers free of installation cbarges during the month of May. That rates totalling £l7 os 3d be written off as at 31et March, 1936. That the borough inspector be directed to prosecute all i arsons riding motor cycles in the borough without using an efficient cut-out. That the council does not adopt the principle of giving credit for motor lorry iicene© fees. That clause 569 of the borough \ by-laws be amended to provide for the \ payment of annual license tees as un- / der: For a building or other structure, the seating accommodation of which does not exceed 250, £1; exceeds 250 but not exceeding 500, £2; exceeds 500 but not exceeding 750, £5; exceeds 750, £lO. That the salary of the Town Glerk be increased by £SO per annum, the additional amount paid to he a charge against the Town Hall account. Works. —That notice be served on P. H. Pease under the authority of section 7 of the Land Drainage Amendment Act. 1913 requiring him to clear creek on his property in King Edward Street to allow ivater to flow away from pui!ver,t on King Edward Street from adjoining lands. That the council accepts from Mr Wilkinson control of area on the bank of the Waingongoro river near the Eltham Road bridge for use as a rubbish dump for a- period of five years on conditions submitted by Mr Wilkinson. Reserves. —That the application of thy Taranaki Association for the use of the Taumata Park on the 6th, 13th and 20th May. with permission to make a charge for admission on May 20, be granted. That the Eltham Football Club’s application for the vise of Taumata Park for the 1926 football season, with permission to make the usual charges for admission, be granted on. the conditions' set down by the committee during the 1925 season. That application be made to the .Hon. the Minister of Lands for permission to lease • the Poto Domain and portion of the Ngaere Cemetery for a .period of five years ns from the Ist July, 1926.
