HAWKE’S BAY PROSPECTS. (By Maecenas.) The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club lias been favoured with excellent acceptances for its autumn meeting, which opens to-morrow.

The majority of the horses appearing in the Mangatarata Hurdles will not be forward enough to do themselves justice. Possibly Crown Coin and Little River will do best."

The hacks appearing in the Longlands Hack Welter are not very good, and their recent form has been poor. Serenade won at Waipukurau on Faster Monday, and My Hobby lias the best form of late of the others. Vivo showed a lot of pace at Awapiuii last week, and a repetition of that" will make her troublesome in the Poukawa Hack Handicap If one could only rely on Good Sport showing his best form tin’s gtyitli ny would be one of the fancied ones for the Autumn Handicap.

Standard ran an excellent third in good class at the late Manawatu meeting, and in the moderate class engaged in the Pohangina, Handicap tomorrow may do well. Father O’Flynn should also run well.

Magna CTiarta ,is improving with every race, and even with 8.12 may be capable of giving Rascal a good race in the Nurserv Handicap. The meeting of Glentruin and Reremoana in the Hawke’s Bay Stakes is creating a lot of interest, and both have many admirers. His recent great performances point to Reremoana winning, but the English-bred mare is good and is certain to make the contest interesting. Star Stranger showed such fine form at the Wellington meeting that, even with 9.4. it is difficult to look beyond his prospects in the Hawke’s Bay Clip. Piutfiair finished so well' at Trentham that this filly may bent all those flown in the handicap.

NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By Maecenas.) Present indications point to the Hawke’s I3av and 'Waikato meetings beiiijr very successful. Judging by the splendid nominations received, the coming meeting of the figment Racing Club should be a really good one from all viewpoints. figmont and Auckland nominations suggest that the coming cross-country season will he quite a good one, for, in addition to all prominent crosscountry performers of last season, several horses with excellent qualifications over the sheep hurdles are nominated for steeplechases. Last season Glenotus showed form over steeplechase courses, but unfortunately went wrong. He is again working well at fillers]ie, in view of the Great Northern meeting. When trained by J. O’Neill at New Plymouth, Tuki made great improvement and finished up the season by winning the Grand National Steeplechase. ' Tnki is now trained at fillers--1 iC. and is going well. Many ancient and infirm jumpers are in training in the South Island, amongst their number being General Advance and General Retain, The last-named has not raced since he won at Wingatui in 1923. At that time he gave great promise, but broke down. Cureaform (from the successful stable of R. Hannon), who did well in hack hurdle races last year, is nominated

for the hurdle race on the second day of the Waikato meeting. Cureaform gave* indications last season of developing into a first-class hurdler. Old Sea De’il, the hero of many a stiff battle against the best of our hurdlers and steeplechasers, has been doing some solid work of late, and his trainer lias hopes of his surviving a preparation. He will possibly race at the Waikato meeting this week, and it will be interesting to sec how he performs. Valicaro,' the unbeaten daughter of Valais, is being heralded as the greatest of her sex that has raced in the southern hemisphere. While Valicare is a great galloper up to ten furlongs at least, it is yet too early to place her on a higher pedestal than Wakeful, and she may not be superior to our own Desert Gold, who when not at her best had a victory over Gloaming, and by many was supported to beat that great galloper. Many are under the impression that racing is practically dead in America, but, judging by the prize-money offering, it is very much alive. At the recent meeting held fit Tia Juqjna (Mexico) the chief event, the Ooffroth Handicap. 1-J miles, was worth no less than 4514.000. It was won by the English-bred colt Carlaris. Although he had not been long in work old Sir Fanciful ran a splendid race in the Hurdles on the first clay of the Manawatu meeting. In all probability this gelding will lie raced in steeplechases during the winter, and, as he has done a lot of hunting, Sir Fanciful should develop into a first-class steeplechaser. He is said to jump “country” well, and we know lie has more pace than most ’chasers. Amongst the surprise nominations for 'future \steeplechasep is that of Nukumai, who showed his best form over hurdles prior to going into retirement last year. As this gelding finished up the "season by winning with 12.5, his trainer may have decided to race Nukumai over country while still in his prime, and in races in which weight does not have the same effect. If he takes kindly to the big jumps Nukumai must be a champion. Prior to the Easter sale of thoroughbreds at Sydney the record price paid in Australasia, for a yearling was 3050gns for Oreus, a full brother to that once great racehorse Poseidon. With the marvellous success that has attended the progeny of the imported Valais, it was only a matter of time and the record price for Oreus would be eclipsed. This came about .in no uncertain manner at Easter, as in one dav colts by Valais were sold jjior 5500, 4100, and 3800 guineas, while a filly by the same sire brought 3000 guineas, Other vearlings by Valais were sold for 2750. 2400, 1560, 1400, and 1000 guineas—a. truly wonderful sale.
