AUROA.

(From Our Own. Correspondent)

Unfortunately adverse conditions on Friday morning spoilt what would have been a record day for the Auroa School. Despite this, the net takings nearly equalled tho.se of last year at a. similar function. Great credit is due to the •ladies who presided over the various stalls, and to those who ran the luncheon/ and refreshment room, the latter having an. especially strenuous time during rush periods. Outside the children's races ’ were in the hands of the teaching- staff, while various members of the committee looked after the chainstepping, sheaf-pitching, nail-driving, and goal-kicking competitions. A feature of the afternoon was a number of Highland dances given by several visiting young ladies, and these gave much pleasure to the spectators. The Hon. O. J. Hawken (Minister of Agriculture) was ail interested spectator during the afternoon.

In the evening the ball was well filled for the benefit picture “The Digger Furl,” kindly screened by Mr Andrews. In all the net takings for the day will be in the vicinity of £4O. Two basket-hall teams from Kapuni School tried conclusions with) Auroa A and B teams during the afternoon. Oddly enough, both games resulted in a draw, the A teams scoring one goal each, the B teams failing to score on either side. . > ■ Apologies were received from Messrs Eaves and Lees, local members of the Education Board, regretting their inability to be present at the function. SOCCER- CONCERT. A 'reminder is given of the Soccer Chib’s concert to be held next Friday evening. The energetic secretary, Mr H. Roberts, assures me that a firstclass programme will lie given to patrons. FARMERS’ UNION. A well-attended meeting was held on Saturday to discuss remits to send to the annual meeting. Weeds, perennial and otherwise, came up for discussion, and one speaker gave it as his opinion that one of the contributing factors to their spread, -so far as this district is concerned, _ was the system of short leases and nigh rents under which so many farms are held. Remits dealing with dehorning of cattle, the St-ratford-Okahukura railway, and the collection of members’ levies were also, dealt with. The chairman mentioned, in the course of some remarks concerning th e union’s activities, that those who sent cattle to Patea with the ton’ll cow drive promoted by the union express themselves as well pleased with their returns.

At a subsequent meeting the provincial executive and secretary met the ladies associated with the union to discuss the social and presentation to be tendered to M,r and Mrs Robert Dunn on May 26. Very complete arrangements were made in keeping with such an important function. Dancing and supper concluded a. very pleasant evening.
