WAVERLEY.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
FOOTBALL. The football season opened on Saturday last, -when Patea seniors played the local fifteen a# Waverley. As is usual with firs t-of-sea son. games, the football was of a patchy nature. Patea, as a result of superior weight, eventually ran out winners oy 12 points to 3. Some promising young players ‘were seen, on each side, and Waverley should field quite a solid junior team in the South Taranaki competition, which opens on Saturday. next. AND p ASS ociATION. At a meeting of the local A. and P. Association, a statement of receipts and expenditure for the' recent A. and P. show was read, showing: Receipts £271 11s 3d, expenditure £330 19s_ 3d, leaving a deficit on the day’s working of £SB 6s sd. ; _ , The setgetarv explained that after adding the annual subscriptions for members the association would probably show a slight profit on the year s work.
The following are the chief items on which a loss was sustained this year, last year’s figures being in parentheses: Entrance fees £BO 4s 9d (£123). donations £63 2s 6d (£75), gate £65 8s (£75), concert and dance £29 2s (£44). Mr Spratt considered that more in the way of amusement should he provided and that side-shows and novelty events should be introduced in order to draw the crowd. Mr Southcombe suggested more children’s events to popularise the show.’ Owing to the number of exhibitors’ passes reducing the gate money, it was decided that no passes be allowed to exhibitors unless entries totalling 10s or more were paid. It was suggested that the committee recommend to the society the advisability of dispensing with the band concert and dance in the future. Some members also thought that the. money spent on band music would have been better spent on novelty events. Members generally considered the_ music for- the day to he very disappointing. The question of showing woolly versus shorn lambs was left over for discussion at a later date. The question of parking exhibitors’ cars was left over in the meantime. The secretary reported that exhibitors rightly complained of being placed in the adjoining paddock. He considered their stands should be in the main ground.
