SPORTS AT KAKARAMEA.

EOBSE-JUAIPING AND OTHER

EVENTS

A SUCCESSFUL DAY

Tlie township of Kakaramea was en fete yesterday on the occasion of the annual sports meeting, which was held in a j) ad dock near the factory, and proved to be successful in every way. Tlie day was line and conditions were pleasant. There was keen competition in all sections of the show, and this was specially marked in the horse leaping. Tlie open leaping contest is a wellknown event along the coast because of the fine entry drawn by the handsome cup and big prize offered for the honour of winning. This has had the effect every year of attracting many of the best known and most successful horses, and the result is an annual display of horse leaping that would do credit to any show. Yesterday’s was no exception to this rule. Great interest centred, too,- in the pony events. .

The judge (Air. Washer) said he was exceedingly pleased. with the display generally, and added that the running was so close that he had great difficulty in separating tlie winners. In the open event, for instance, the first run made two horses level, one a. point behind, and three others two points away. In this event he had to give two horses three runs before lie made his decision.

The heavy horses were, in the opinion of the judge (Mr. Oughton) a very good and serviceable .-lot. It is a, .section that deserves support, and should be encouraged by all show committees. Mr. Lankow, of Manaia, was one of the most successful conn petitors. All other sections were good and well contested The judges were well pleased with the entries. Two pipers from Eltham were present and provided the music for the reels and strathspeys. The president (Mr. F. S. Tarrant) spared no effort in seeing that everything went well. The lion, secretary (Mr. F. S. McKenna) proved himself the. right man in the right place, and had every, thing going like clockwork. Their efforts were well supported bv the menibers of the committee, all of whom worked hard to achieve success. PRIZE) HIST. The awards were as below : Heavy Horses.
