RUGBY.

WEDNESDAY UNION CONTROL

a ianagement coaiai ittee MEETING.

NEW GROUP PROPOSED

A meeting el' tlie Management Committee of the Haweua Wednesday Rugby Football Union was held at Mr Elgar’s room last evening. There were present: Messrs !d. Thrush (chairman), S. J. Tidsweli, A. Tomlinson, A. Notman and A. K. Elgar (secretary). With reference to th© suggestion previously made that a team from Oeo should affiliate with the union, a deputation comprising Messrs J. Calder, E. Eduards, it. Hdkaka, and It. Hughes, of Oeo, waited upon the meeting; Mr Calder stated that there were ample players available on Wednesday from tne Oeo and Opunake districts to support three or more teams, but that it was doubtful if the travelling difficulty could be overcome. The deputation wished to .suggest, therefore, that a giroup to play under the Wednesday Union control lie formed in the Oeo district. It -would be possible to get a team from Oeo, one from, the Sheet Road and the area northwards to To Kiri, and on© from Opunake. Three teams were thus practically sure, while it was probable that another would he available from Auroa. Mr Cabled* further said it was proposed that if the union sanctioned its formation the group would conduct its own competition, the season’s winners to play off for the union championship with the premiers of the Hawera district. 'Wednesday would be more suitable than Saturday for players in the proposed group and that those who contemplated joining would not in any case be able to piny in-the Saturday competitions.

The chairman said that when the union was first formed it was intended to cater for players m the Hawera district who were unable, owing to the half-holiday being unsuitable, to piay on Saturdays. The union, however, was naturally anxious that a,s many players as possible should be attracted to the game and, provided that no interference with the Saturday competitions was involved, would be perfectly willing to give eveiry assistance possible to the proposed group. The secretary expressed himself in similar terms, but [jointed out hat to play a group competition at least four teams would be necessary. If that number could he found he would strongly favour tlie recognition of the group by tlie 11 noin. He moved that authority be given for the formation of a group of at least four clubs at Oeo to conduct a, competition under- the control of the union, ‘ the local control to ho vested in a committee comprising, a representative of each club, and- tlm group to be represented by one member on the union management committee. Air Tomlinson seconded, and the motion was carried. GENERAL.
