MATAPU.

SOCIAL EVENING. The annual social given by Mr and Mrs P. N. Petty was he'-d in the Matapu Hall last Friday evening, and the wonderful success that it proved to be must have indeed gratified the host and hostess. The hall, which was very prettily decorated by Mrs H. Sharpe and a largo staff, was wed filled with guests from Matapu and the surrounding district. The- host and hostess kept things going, and there was not a dull moment all the evening. The musical box competitions for the kiddies were by Rita and Bessie Seed. Tile' children had the run of the floor for a polka, wa.ta and set of lancers, and they quite enjoyed themselves. The niusieai and elocutionary programme presented was greatly appreciated, encores being the order of the evening. The following contributed to the programme:—Duet, Mrs Carter and Miss D. McKenny, “Moonlight and Hoses.” Songs: Mrs Carter, “Keep Your Toys” ; Miss F. Jenkins, ‘‘Give Thanks and Sing,” “The Night Has a Thousand Eyes,” “To a Miniature,” and the old favourite “Mother Machiree” ; Mr Morris, “Wait” and “Hinder Courtship”; Mr Silver, “My Bassoon,” “The Garden Subub,” “'An Egg for My Tea,” “House Hunting,” and ‘The Boy in the Bag” ; Mrs Strachan, “Eat Little Fellow With Mamma’s Eyes” and “An Emblem”; Mr Hessel,. “Captain Mac” and “When the Great Red Dawn is Shining” ; Mr Strachan, “When I was a Boy at School.” Recitations: Mavis Tapp, “The Party” and “Nothing Suited Him” ; Arts Strange, “Scarcely Homo from the Honeymoon,” “Any Other Time,” “The Way-backs at the Zoo,” and “The Old Story.” Cornet .siolos, Mr Bradley, “Killarney,” “New Colonial March,” and “Silver Threads Among the Gold.” Mr Petty thanked the assemblage for helping to make the evening the wonderful success that it had been, and called for three cheers for the musicians, Messrs Sharpe and Robinson, who had been playing under difficulties. On behalf of those present, Air R. Treweek thanked Mr and Airs Petty for the entertainment. He called for three cheers for them, and, with, the orchestra leading, the company sang “For They are Jolly Good Fellows.” Then the adults joined hands iround the hall, and with the children grouped in the centre the entire company sang “Auld Lang Syne” and concluded with the National Anthem. It was a scene that wifi not easily be forgotten, and many people will carry pleasant recol'eetions of the wonderfu evening that they had spent through the kindness of Air. and Mrs. Petty. Accompanists for the songs were Miss McKenny, Airs Graham and All’s Jenkins. Mrs- L. Proeoe and Miss M. Guy played several extras for the dances. PERSONAL.
Air Ken. Sharpe has had tio< undergo an operation for appendicitis, and his numerous friends will wish him a. speedy recovery. The condition of Air Luxton. w ( ho has had a smilar operation, is rather serious, and we are all hoping tor a turn for the better.
