Ait the Hawena Hospital on Thursday evening, a pleasant Jitttle iu notion for the double purpose of bidding farewell to the matron (Miss It. Loeihhead) and to Aveleome her successor (Miss Nutsey, from Stratford) took place. The gathering took the> form of a complimentary dinner, at which Dr. 'V. M. Thompson presided. There were preeem as guests members of the Hospital Board, the medical practitioners of the district, and others intimately, connected with the institution, and the nursing staff. Tile toast list included'the health of Miss Lochhead, proposed by Dr- Thomson and responded to by Mr. Campbell (acting chairman of the board), and that of Miss Nutsey, - proposed hv Dr. Stokes, to which Miss Nutsey" replied. During the evening several presentations were made. Mr, Campbell presented Miss Lochhead with a tortoise-shell dressingtable set, a piece of hand-painted gold-leaf china from the medical practitioners was presented by Dr. Buist, a travelling rug and fountain pen from the nurses and staff by Dr, Thomson, and a bouquet by one of the younger patients. Momentary excitement was caused in Regent Street, Hawera. about noon to-day by the antics of a new-dmd high-powered motor-car, owned and driven by Mr. F. Sattler, of Kapuni. Mr. Sattler was coming up from the South Road and was pulling in to stop on the vs)ide of the street between Little Regent and High Streets. At hen he went to apply the' brake to bring the motor-car to rest, he pressed the accelerator by mistake, and the machine shot forward, bumped a delivery van belonging to the London Dyeworks, over-ran a bicycle owned by Mr. J. Johnston, which was standing against the kerb, and finally snapped off a verandah post in front of Staub’s shop. No person was injured, hut the front wheel of the bicycle suffered severely.
