NARROW ESCAPE.
CAR GOES OVER PRECIPICE. PASSEXGERS GET OUT IN TIME. (BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) NEW PLYMOUTH, April 6. An. Auckland party returning from a trip to Taranaki met -with an aeci- - dent on Mount Alessenger this afternoon, which resulted iii the loss by fire , of the. car and the narrow escape iof the driver, S. Ringer. The party were „ •in a big touring car., and on climbing oe?b of the steep sections on the New Plymouth, side, of the mountain flames were, seen issuing from the car. The occupants (Alessrs L. Hardley, owner, and F. Reid) jumped out and endeavoured: to suppress the flames. Ringer put on the emergency, brake, which, however, would not hold, and the car started to go -down the hill and over the iside.
Ringer managed to jump clear, and - :' tlie car went hurtling down to tlie..bottom of the valley, a sheer drop of 200 feet. With it went all the luggage, which was consumed in the fire that completely destroyed the. car. The party had a narrow escape, for had they not 1 got out in time they must have been dashed to death. The party were afterwards brought into town by a service, ’bus.
