GUNBOATS MAY COMPEL PAYMENT. The people of two of the Aran Islands. which form part of the County of Galway, will not pay their taxes. In fact, they have not paid them for 20 years, and. Mr Lydon, of the Galway County Council, is advocating the use of a gunboat to collect rates from the islanders. Poverty is advanced as the reason for non-payment, but sonie of the members of the council say the poorest persons in the county pay their taxes, while the wearers of silks have been resisting payment for years. The Aran Islands protect the Gulf of Galway from the Atlantic, and the entire group has a population of only about 35,000.
