NEW PLYMOUTH TOURNAMENT.

P. GREY MAKES COURSE RECORD. There was a good muster of golfers from many parts of the island at the annual golf tournament held at New Plymouth, which opened on Saturday. The greens were in first-class order, and the course generally good. The standard of play was high and better probably than at any previous tourney. Altogether there were 82 entries, and all expressed satisfaction with the general arrangements. ' FIRST DAY’S PLAY. THE AMATEUR RECORD.

All -went like clockwork from the first drive at the first tee, and a tribute must be paid to the excellent work of the hon. secretary (Mr W. Phillips) and the official starter (Mr EL Dempsey), assisted by the committee. The feature of the day’s play was a fine score put up by P. Grey, the New Plymouth champion, who notched the remarkable figures of 73, breaking the record previously held by A. Seifert, of Palmerston North. His card read as follows: —Out: 4'. 4. 3,6, 3, 4,4, 6, 3—37. In: 3,4, 2,5, 3,5, 4, 5, 5—36. The teams match was won by New Plymouth, Eltham being second. , P. Grey and G. H. CANTERBURY CHAMPIONSHIP

WON BY AUSTRALIA. CHRISTCHURCH, April 4. An Australian visitor, W. R. DoF son, won the Canterbury amateur golf championship at Shirley. His first round totalled 73 and his.second 75, making i total of 148 for the first- and second rounds. Dobson is a plus one man. The runner-up was B. V. Wright, of Tinraru, the present champion. His rounds were 76 and 74, total 150. The stroke handicap in the morning was .won by T. H. A. Richards with 67, and in the afternoon by E. Cordner with a. net score of 71. f-TERETAUNGA TOURNAMENT. >■ DUNCAN’S GOOD ROUND. WELLINGTON, April 3. The Wellington provincial golf championships commenced to-day at Heretaunga. Entries were smaller than for several years. Scoring to-day was marred by a high wind. The best cards for the first 18 holes were returned by A. D. S. D|m can (Wellington) 74 and T. 11. Horton (Masterton) 75. / ■
