BUTTER POOL.
AUSTRALIAN ANOMALY. SUPPLIES FROM NEW ZEALAND. (Bv Telegraph.—Special to the Star.) WELLINGTON, March 30. Some peculiar features have developed in the Australian butter market. Canada recently imposed a clumping duty against the Commonwealth butter, owing to the fact that it was being sold in Australia at a rate higher than that at which it was available in Canada. This was possible owing to the operation of a levy on all butter sold on the Australian local market and payable to the exporters in order to equalise trade and to prevent undue congestion of the local market. Reports are to hand that Melbourne dealers have complained _ that their pooled orders are not being supplied from Queensland, and that there is a danger of the pooling system collapsing It is a singular fact that somewhat extensive Australian orders for butter have been placed in New Zealand for shipment; in April. This is despite the fact that suppliers of the Australian local market are being levied under the Patterson scheme for tliG encouragement of Australian port to l-elieve the local market. It is thought that the New Zealand butter is primarily intended for the Eastern tinned butter trade.
