ANOTHER CHANGE.
IN FRENCH SITUATION. GOVERNMENT DEFEAT AVERTED. BY CABLE-PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received 12.10 p.m. to-day. PARIS. March 28. The political and financial situation has been drastically transformed. The ‘Government’s fate, which on Friday seemed sealed owing to Socialists and Radicals opposing the increase in the business tournover tax, upon which the Government insisted, but on Saturday M. Perot suddenly informed the Finance Committee of the Chamber that he had given ‘up this tax and would instead submit a proposal far an increase in certain indirect taxes, especially wines, beers and spirits, and certain stamp duties. M. Peret asked for a little time to out the finishing touches on the' new nreject, and the committee readily agreed, and thus an anti-Gdv-ernment majority on the turnover tax was averted at the eleventh hour.
An amendment by Deputy Margaine in favour of a, State monopoly of petroleum and sugar was adopted by the Finance Committee. Tt provides for State control of the importations ot raw petroleum and its derivations and suqfiti’ from Ist Janunrv. 1927, hut it isijjjot certain that Parliament will pifp it.--Reuter.
