THE RED CHURCH
MONASTICISM TO GO. DECISION OF AUTHORITIES. SOVIET SEIZES C A THE DEAL. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—'COPYRIGHT. Received 11.18 a.ru. to-day. LONDON, March 28. The Riga correspondent of the Times says that the self-styled Holy Synod of* Moscow, representing the Red branch of the Russian Orthodox Church, has decided, apparently under the Soviets instructions, to abolish riionasticism;, declaring that it had outlived its purpose and did not reflect modern ideas. Therefore the monks must repudiate their vows and adopt a useful livelihood. It is pointed out that since 1923 many monasteries have continued obscurely, keeping within the law by organising as working communities.
The Soviet seized St. Izaao’s Cathedral .at Leningfad because night rowdies stole the external bronze ornamentations. - It is believed that the Soviet, itself despoiled the cathedral as m protext for its seizure.—Times.
