Reports from Tientsin state that a« a result of representations on the subject of mines sunk at xhe river mouth at Taku made by then consular body to Ivuominehun, the authorities have now arranged that ships displaying special signals will be allowed to enter and leave the river during daylight. The diplomatic body .protested to the h oreigu Office against Peking being cut off from the sea. in. violation of the protocol of 1901. A .self-constituted section ot the Miscellaneous \\ ackers’ Union, stating that it was acting under the orders of the Agricultural and Labourers’ Commission, entered the Gant-on Hospital and forced the working .staff, except the Chinese nurses, to- strike, threatening tp kill any remaining behind. The workers appealed for police protection, which was refused. There are seventy patients likely to starve in .the hospital. Water and food supplies have been cut off, .and the supply of electricity will l>e cut off later.—Reuter.
