Mr. Gwyn J. Lewis, of Kaponga, and Mrs. Lewis arrived in Eltham last evening on the return from their honeymoon.
The Minister of Health, Hon J. A. Young, was .accorded a civic reception at Hamilton yesterday. Later the Minister opened the new nurses’ home at the Waikato Hospital in the presence of a large gathering. T'he Minister left for Wellington last night. The death of Mr, Edmund Mahoney, a well-known so'locitor of Auckland, occurred yesterday. He was 73 years: of age.—'Press Assn. General Sir Andrew Russell has consented to perform the ceremony* of unceiling the Stratford War Memorial. A Sydney Sun cable message from London states that Signor Marconi was operated on at a London nursing home for an Literal complaint, which at first was thought to be appendicitis. At the annual meeting of the Eltham Rugby Football Club a very hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr. A. O. Oasey for his good work as president during the last two years. In acknowledging the vote, Mr. Casey said he had been pleased to do all he could. He was, however, convinced that it would be wise that his position should go round, as was the case in Kaponga, and therefore they should get new blood. He wished his successor every success. The Prime Minister has announced t-hat Mr W. H. Hales, who for the past year has been acting as divisional superintendent for tlie New Zealand Railways for the North Island, is retiring on superannuation. Mr E Casey, inspecting engineer of the civil engineering department, has been appointed acting-divisionai superintendent in succession to Mr Halos, and will assume the position forthwith, says % a Wellington Press Association telegram. A vote of sympathy with the relative of the late Mr. W. B. Sheerin was passed at the monthly meeting of the Waimate West County Council yesterday, the council standing in silence. Appreciative reference to the services rendered by Mr. Sheerin as 'a contractor to the council was expressed by the chairman (Or. E. Long) and the engineer (Mr. A. J. Hansen), who' also paid tribute to Mr. S'heemi’s. sterling character and the integrity which had marked his dealing with the council.
