The Star lias been fortunate in securing; for publication “The Blade Olwl,” a new serial story by William Le Queux, one of tlie most popular English writers of the clay. The first chapter will appear to-morrow night.
At the monthly meeting of the Waamnte West County Council yesterday it was decided to take legal action for the recovery of all outstanding rates not received by March 22.
In accordance with law, all transactions in fat cattle in the Argentine are now made on a live weight basis at so much per pound. The Roman Clatholic Church authorities, in keeping pace with the advancement of Wanganui, have .purchased portion of a large estate at Aramoho for the erection of an up-to-date, college.
The quarterly meeting of the South Taranaki School Committee’s Association will he held at Eltham to-night. The Hawera Defence Ride Club will shoot to-morrow (Saturday; afternoon for the second competition for the Vice-President's trophy and for Bennett and Sutton’s trophy. As advertised in this issue, members of the Kaponga Eootball Club are reminded of the practice to-morrow at 2 o’clock. It is necessary that there should be a full attendance of members, and all .are urged to attend. A reminder is given of the very fine concert to be given in the Opera House to-night under the auspices of the Hawera Municipal Band. During an interval in the programme the Mayor (Mr E. A. Pacey) and Mr L. A. Bone (chairman of the Eire Board) will present the champion Hawera Fire Brigade team and shields. The price of admission, 26 and Is, are within the reach of all, and a- bumper house is expected. At a recent sale in Southern Taranaki, two Stratford farmers purchased between them a line of sheep, which were driven to their new homes in, the vicinity of Stratford. Almost at once odd members of the flocks commenced to die, and on comparing notes yesterday the tally of mortality was found to be'seven sheep on one farm and six on the other. The perturbed farmers at once called in the local stock inspector, who diagnosed the complaint as that disease of the liver which attacks sheep when hard fed off a paddock infested by ragwort (says the Eltham Argus).
The Supreme Count opened at Hokitika yesterday, Mr. Justice Adams presiding. The grand jury found true bills in charges of causing bodily harm, alleged negligent driving arising out of a motor lorry collision and alleged arson arising out of four fires on the; night of September 28, when the Methodist Church was gutted. The court .heard arson change, John William JUpsett, alias John Sinclair, (being arraigned. The jury returned at 7.30 p.m. with! a verdict of not guilty on all counts. — Press Assn.
The Stratford Jersey Cattle Club’s annual demonstration took place on Thursday, Mr E. Griffiths acting as demonstrator. This year the club adopted a different system from that in vogue in previous years, and instead of the demonstration taking place at one farm, three farms were visited, viz.—those of Messrs W. Johnson (Ngaere), J. B. Clemow (Opunake road), and A. J. Smith (Cardiff). — Post.
