LOCAL AND GENERAL.

An unknown man, aged about 40, was run over and killed at Whakatu by the seven o’clock train from Hastings to Napier last evening.—Press Assn.

A change in the ownership of the oldestablished boarding establishment, Dominion House, in Wellington Street, has been effected, the late owner, Mrs M. L. Higham, having disposed of the property to Mrs M. A. Hammond, who until recently was the licensee dr the Alton Hotel.' Mrs Hammond will take over on March 15. Messrs Grant and Co. effected the transfer.

That it was cheaper to post- a parcel from Hawera. to Wellington than to consign it by rail, although the Post Office used the railway as its means of conveyance, was stated at last evening’s meeting of the executive of the Chamber of Commerce, by Mr. E. O. Fletcher. Although other members confirmed this no solution was offered, except that the postal authorities, who employed officers for the purpose of packing and entraining, could probably do the work more cheaply than the Flail way Depaitment.

There 'has just passed away suddenly at New Plymouth the son of one of the earliest families—(Mr. Ben Fox, at the age of 72 years. The father of the late Mr. Fox belonged to the old boating service, and was one of those hardy seamen who often risked their lives while tendering craft in the roadstead. In fact Mr. Fox, senr., on one occasion was in a boat that Was swamped, and life was thought to be extinct when he was rescued. He never thoroughly recovered from the immersion, and it is a well-known fact that it (shortened his days. There were one or two passengers drowned on the occasion referred to.
