HAWERA SCHOOL.
ANNUAL SWIMMING SPORTS. The annual swimming sports of the Haw ora School were held at the municipal baths yesterday afternoon. Throughout and ' interesting programme the various events were contested with keen enthusiasm'. A particularly pleasing feature of the competitions' was the unselfish spirit with which they wete contested. While arrangements have been made for awards in the various events, the prizes will not become the property of the successful entrants, but, in the form of books to be added to the library, will remain in the possession of the school. The events and names of the winners are to be inscribed in the respective books awarded for the particular contests, and thus, while the successful competitors wall be rewarded by having their performances so recorded in the life of the school, their efforts will result in a benefit to their fellow pupils and those who will follow in the future. Under the competent supervision of the teaching staff, the various events followed in quick succession without the slightest confusion, and the lengthy programme was completed well within schedule time. The headmaster (Mr. F. A. Bates), who officiated as organiser, also attended to the starter's duties, Miss K. Robertson and Mr. J. R. Nairn acted as judges, Misses Carroll and Kirk as blackboard stewards and Misses Hunter and Grindrod as results stewards, while as call stewards Misses Peterson and Nutting and Messrs. Baker and Lawn marshalled the competitors in readiness for action. CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS. Principal interest in the programme centred in the girls’ and boys’ championship contests for cups donated re*
spectivdly. by Mrs. A. Thompson and Air. A. Gray. In both championships rRCos wore swum over two distances ■■ 50 yards and 25 yards.' The girls’ trophy was annexed by Betty Powarell, ■who won both distances, in each of which she was closely attended by Sylvia Ryan in second position. In the boys’ 50 yards, D. Hammond and A.
