HIGH PRICES FOR LAND
COMPARISON WITH ARGENTINE
The effect of the high prices nowbeing paid for land in New Zealand was mentioned by Mr G. R. Ritchie, general manager of the National Mortgage and Agency Company, Ltd., on his return from Canada, Great Britain and the Continent. Mr Ritchie said that in the future the Argentine would have to be considered a serious competitor in marketing dairy produce. The Argentine was half as near again to Britain as was New Zealand, and that gave the country an advantage in . placing butter and meat on the London market. Lower freight charges were also important, but most important of all was the fact that the Argentine produce needed to be chilled only, and chilled produce always commanded a higher figure than frozen produce. When it Avas considered that good dairying land in the Argentine could he bought for £ls an acre, it further emphasised the fact that New Zealand land values were generally too high.
