ILLITERATE JUDGES.

CONVICTED OF CORRUPTION. SORRY STATE OF JUSTICE IN BALTIC STATES. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received 10 a.m. to-day. LONDON, March 3. The Riga correspondent of The Times states that the trial of 96 judges and lawyers, accused of bribery and corruption, resulted in 70 convictions and sentences ranging from two to 10 years’ imprisonment. The Court, in explaining the absence of death sentences, due!, to the offenders’ proletarian origins, stated that the trial disclosed the sorriest picture of the administration of justice- by untrained judges. Many of the accused were almost illiterate. The most prominent figure was Dem ehenko, who was sentenced io ten years’ imprisonment. He was long known as the “King of Liberators,’’ because he contrived to release accused persons who were able to pay the price.
