DUNEDIN DEMONSTRATION.
HAWERA WIN FIRST EVENT.

Under ideal conditions the New Zealand United Fire Brigades’ Association commenced its biennial competitions this morning on the exhibition sports ground, 79 brigades competing. The events commenced with the Gilberd memorial, two men coupling, three men hose and hydrant, and, dressing and ladder-climbing for one man. Some very fast times were recorded in the latter event, which was the only one completed at the end of the day. Superintendent Morrison (Hawera Brigade) gave a brilliant display of smart dressing and ladder-climbing, winning the event in the very smart time of 14 3-5 seconds. THREE EVENTS IN PROGRESS. HAWERA LEADING IN ONE. LYING SECOND IN ANOTHER. (Special to The Star.) DUNEDIN, March 3. In the only event so far completed at the United Fire Brigades ’ demonstration, Hawera has secured a win, while Hawera competitors are leading in one, and lying second in another and jfP'irth in the third of the events which partially completed at the close ©x today’s competitions. Results are:— COMPLETED EVENT. Ladder Dressing (special event not counting fov shield points). One man x dressed in shirt and trousers, with cover, to be lying on stretcher. At signal to get up and dress, putting on tunic, boots, helmet, belt and spanner, run 25 yards to ladder and ascend' ladder to* platform.
Hawera (Supt. Morrison), 14 3-ssec 1 Hillside Railway, 16sec - Te Ivuiti, 17sec 9 Gore (17 l-ssee) fourth, Onehunga (18 3-ssee) fifth, Hastings (18 4-ssec) sixth. EVENTS INCOMPLETE. Gilberd Memorial Coupling. One man dressed in shirt and trousers, with cover, to be lying on stretcher 10 yards in rear of plug. At signal to get up and dress, putting on tunic, boots, helmet, belt and spanner; run 10 yards, fix hydrant, unstrap and couple to hydrant 50 feet of coiled hose, run out hose and connect to union, then connect 50 feet to each delivery of union, run out both lengths, fix branches, and finish five yards in front of branches. (New Zealand record time, 63 2-ssee., by'Supt. A. Morrison, now of Hawera). ■—Whangarei leading, 64 3-ssec., Hawera second, 68 3-ssec. Then come Devonport, Dannevirke, Napier Railway, and Te Aroha. Over 30 teams yet to compete. ' . Coupling. Two men to run 25 yards from rear of plug, skip hydrant, connect 50 feet of dry canvas hose to each delivery of hydrant, run out and connect hose to two unions, connect 50 feet of hose to each delivery of unions, fix four branches, and finish five yards in front of branches. —Te Kuiti leading, Gore second, Taihape third, Hawera Fourth. Then: Hillside Railway, Te Aroha, and Hastings. Thirty teams yet to run. Hose and Hydrant (wet). Three men to run five yards, pick up hydrant, two 50 feet coils of ’wet hose, properly strapped, and two branches. Run 25 yards to plug, ship hydrant, connect one length of hose to each delivery, at hydrant, fix branches and strike discs. —Hawera leading 26 2-ssec, Dannevirke second, Thames third.
