SUCCESS IN SYDNEY. MISS STOCKLEi BREAKS AUSTRALIAN RECORD. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT Received Feb. 25, 12.45 p.m. SYDNEY, Feb. 25. In tlie 440 yards swimming championship, Miss Piri Page (New Zealand) was lying third early. She was taking the advantage of the turns and gaining on each occasion. At 300 yards, with a good sprint, she came up beside the leader; but from 350 yards Miss Cauldwell displayed a fine burst of speed till the end, the New Zealander being unable to respond. In the 100 yards backstroke championship, Miss Ena Stocklev (New Zealand) took the lead early, and was eight feet ahead at the turn. On the return lap she 6et up a speed impossible to surpass, and won by four yards from Miss Mealing. Although th© Coogee baths are not adapted to record-breaking, owing to the shallow water “(three feet at one end. the New Zealand girl clipped seven and two-fifths seconds off 'the Australian record.
The holder, Miss Mealing, also reduced her own record time, taking Imin 24 2-s.sec to cover the distance. Miss Stocklev’s record tim© was Imin 21 2-ssec.
