The ceremony of declaring the fete open for business was performed by the Mayor (Mr E. A. Pacey). He expressed the liope that all would enjoy themselves and deal liberally at the stalls and at the afternoon tea tent, so that a good sum might be raised. He said it was somewhat disappointing to see that there were not many more present for the opening, and that many of the workers were away, probably at the Exhibition, and the work therefore had been left to a,, few. He stated that the annual expenditure of the Hawera branch was £BOO, towards which the Government gave £l3B, and the balance eame from the people. It wouid therefore be seen that the Plunket Society was net • a Government institution. He hoped all woud give the utmost encouragement to the> women’s committee who controlled it all. the year round to help render facilities for the bringing up of babies who would grow into healthy and strong men and women. They were one of the best assets the country could have and should be given every opportunity ana help so that they could rank with the best. He then declared the. fete open. Mrs B. L. Joll, in the absence of the president (Mrs M. J. Goodsen), thanked- the Mayor for his kindness in officially opening the ceremony. She assured the people that there was a real need for money and hoped they would all respond liberally. COMPETITIONS.
