PERSONAL ITEMS.

The many friends of Mr W. D. Johnson, of Hawera, who' has_ been indisposed for some time, will regret to learn that he has been obliged to .go into a private hospital for-special treatment. A Gisborne Press Association, message states that Mr J. Machell, aged 42, prominent in polo circles, died today as the result of injuries sustained during a polo, game on Saturday. The first election of a mayor and council for the new borough of Upper Hutt took place yesterday (says a Wellington telegram). There were two candidates for the mayoralty, Mr. A. J. McCurdy, for many years associated with the progress of the town, beating Mr. W. H. P. Barber, a. former member of Parliament and a well-known Wellington business man, by 750 votes to 385. There were 20 candidates for eight seats on the council, the following being elected: Messrs C. L. A. Spearman, W. Greig, H. E. Lodge, James Blewman, J. M. Beechey, A. Howell, J. K. Johnston, and T, R. Jameson.

Members of the Hawera Swimming Club and Athletic Rugby Football Club foregathered last evening at the Savoy Rooms to meet and say au re voir to Mr. F. W. Grant, a popular and valued member of both clubs, who is to leave Hawera shortly. Mr. E. C. Fletcher, president of the Swimming Club, was in the chair, and in the course of a happy speech eulogised the services to the clubs of Mr. Grant and the regret felt by all at his departure from the town. On behalf of both clubs, Mr. Fletcher presented Mr. Grant with a fountain pen as a mark of the esteem and regard in which he was held by all members, and a slight appreciation of all the good work done by him in the cause of athletic sports. Mr. Grant briefly replied, thanking members for their kindly thoughtfulness and expressions of good fellowship. He assured them he would never forget Hawera and those connected with sport here.
