POLAND’S CANDIDATURE

FAVOURED BY FRANCE. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received Feb. 19, 1.10 p.m. PARIS, Feb. 18. At the conclusion of the Briand and Von Hoeseh conversations, after which Von Hoeseh went to Berlin, details were published by Le Matin. Briand toid Von Hoeseh that Poland’s presence on the League Council seemed necessary for a thorough and loyal fulfilment of the Locarno agreements. He also considered that- South America should be permanently represented. Other French .papers strongly favour Poland’s candidature for a. place on the League Council. —Reuter.

PREVIOUS REPORT DENIED NO AGREEMENT.

BERLIN. Feb. 18. Recereed Feb. 19, 11.40 a.m. The report that Sir George Drummond and Dr. Stresemann had agreed that Germany* alone ishould be granted a permanent seat on the League Council in March is entirely without foundation. It was* true! that the* ciuestimrof its compostion was* discussed, and Dr. Stresemann pointed out the serious difficulties that would arse if the council were .suddenly enlarged by the inclusion of other members besides Germany, hut it was authoritatively emphasised than the foreign Governments concerned must decide the future composition of the council. Sir Eric Drummond confined himself to the expression of personal views, which were stated to be .sympathetic towards the German attitude. POLAND’S APPEAL. FOR, PERMANENT SEAT. Received Feb. 19. 12.40 p.m. WARSAW, Feb, 18. That Germany lias preseted a note to Poland regarding the League Council is offically denied. In the meantime the Polish League of Nations Association has appealed_ to similar organisations abroad, asking them to* .support Poland’s claim for a permanent seat on the Council, emphasising the part that Poland would play, owing to her geographical position, in securing European pacification.—Aus.N.Z.
