BUSH FIRES

OUT OF CONTROL. OVER 200,000 ACRES SWEPT. VALUABLE TIMBER DESTROYED. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. (Received Feb. 3, 11.30 a.in.) SYDNEY, Feb. 3. The senior forestry officer at Tumut considers that there is no hope of combatting the bush fires until rain falls., as they have such a firm hold upon the forest country. There has been considerable destruction of valuable timber between Tumbarumba and Tumut. SYDNEY, Feb. 2. The bush fires are now raging over the whole of the southern district from Albert to Canberra. They already have swept 200,000 acres of forest and pastures. A large number of fire-fighters are out in all directions, but their efforts have been futile, the flames rushing on before a high westerly wind. The fires are still raging over a great area around Albury and Gungadai.
