THEFT FROM HOTELS. (BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) FOXTON, Jan. 27. Thieves entered boarders’ rooms at Whyte’s and the Family Hotels at Eoxton last night. Approximately £5 were stolen from each hotel. GO-SLOW IN FREEZING WORKS. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 27. The go-slow policy was resumed in two freezing works yesterday afternoon. Islington and Borthwick’s are the works concerned. TRAINING TEACHERS. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 27. Complaints have been made that Canterbury students have been excluded from the Normal Training College .at Christchurch, while students from other districts have been admitted. The chairman of the Education Board explains that this is necessary, as the hoard has to train 1200 teachers yearly. It must consider districts like Wanganui, Taranaki, Hawke’s Bay, Nelson and Southland, which have no training colleges. DEMAND FOR TELEPHONES. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 27. Eighteen hundred Christchurch people are. waiting to he connected with the telephone system, and 400 of them must wait 18 months yet. This state of affairs was disclosed by an inquiry at the telegraph office. The department can never catch up with the demand they say. FIRE AT ‘WOODVILLE. AVOODVILLE, Jan. 27. Large two-storeyed stables adjoining the Commercial Hotel were destroyed by fire this morning. The weather was ’ calm or the hotel would have gone too. Incendiarism is suspected, as an hour before the discovery of the outbreak everything was all right. The insurances are not available.
WOODVILLE CLAIMS A RECORD.
WOODVILLE, .Jan. 27.
The police returns for .1925 show that there worn no drunks for the period. This is claimed without, fear of contradiction, to bo a Dominion record, if not a world record for a prosperous town containing five hotels. It also shows what can be done if the hotels are properly supervised.
BURNT WITH MOLTEN LEAD
AUCKLAND, Jan. 27
Cyril Franklin, a single man, is lying in a serious condition in hospital, suffering from burns about the right arm and hand, caused by splashes from molten lead as cold flux was being poured into a ladle.
COUNTRY HOTEL DESTROYED
GISBORNE,. Jan. 27. The Tiniroto Hotel, a building of twenty rooms, 45 miles inland from Gisborne, Was completely destroyed by fire- ’ast night, nothing being saved. The store adjoining had a narrow escape. The builidng was insured by the Cooper’s estate for £ISOO. The licensee. Mr Baty. held a policy of £6OO on the stock and furniture.
