COMMENTS ON THE PACING, (By Telegraph —Special to the Star.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 20. The weather was very hot for the opening day of the Wellington RacingClub’s- summer meeting. The recent rains had made the race trank well nigh perfect for racing. A large and representative crowd assembled: and were treated to a splendid day’s sport. Enthusiasm, by coming over too soon in the race for the Cup spoilt what gave promise- of being; a great finish

Ladv liesmond delayed the start a long time, but. when tiie barrier rose sbe showed great brilliancy by crossing over to the inside rails to lead Kilperon, Note and llynanna into the straight-. When in a line for the winning post Gleninnis and then Front Bank challenged Lady Desmond, but she showed speed and courage to win by a neck, Front Bank getting up to beat Gleninnis in the last stride. Note was fourth and Paper Boy, finishing fast, was a, close fifth. The withdrawal of The Banker and Beacon Light left seventeen to contest the Wellington Cup. Of them Enthusiasm,. Te Monanui, Star Stranger and Star Banger looked particularly well, but Muraahi and Clarinda both went very short in their preliminaries. When betting in the race ceased, the bracket (Star Stranger and Star Banger) were the favourite combination, while Enthusiasm, Te Monanui and the Biddiford bracket (Grand Knight, Boyal Divorce and Fool’s Paradise) were next in order., Prom a splendid start the field ran in a line for some distance; then Gala Day took the lead and passing the • stand was attended by Star Stranger, Treshnni, Grand Knight, Boval Divorce and Surveyor. As the field raced into the back stretch ‘Gala; Day was out in front, but. Star Banger soon took charge from Gala Day, Boyal Divorce, Fool’s Paradise and Star Stranger, with Muraahi last. Star Banger was still in charge at the home turn from Gala Day, Boyal Divorce, Enthusiasm and* Star Stranger. A furlong from the post McCarten asked Enthusiasm for her best. She quickly responded, but came in far too quickly, completely spoiling the good chances held by Te Monanui and Star Stranger. Flushing well', Enthusiasm -ran on to win by over a length from the unlucky pair* Te Monanui and Star Stranger, which were divided by inches. Martulla, Grand Knight, Gala Day and Surveyor were all close up. Modern and Tommy Dodd were the best supported for the Anniversary Handicap, and after a good race they each paid a dividend.. When the tapes rose Printemps was actually first to show out, but Boyal Diadem soon went to the lead from Printemps and Modern. With half the journey over, Boyal Diadem still led, and at the home turn he was followed by Modern. Tommy Dodd. Tioga and Miss Govern. Once in the straight. Tommy Dodd and Modern settled down to f a good contest, which went to Tommy Dodd by a small margin from Modern. Printemps was two lengths away third, followed by Economist and Betrospect! Another large field went out for the Telegraph Handicap, and in a good pool Tamatete was the elect of bettors while Hipo and Black Cat followed in order of favouritism. When the positions could be picked out, ticinius, Ilka and Shirley -comprised. tps leading division, and at the course proper Lieinius was just in front of Ilka; Shirley, Set Sail, Orchid and Tamatete

When in a line for the winning post, Cawnporo came fast and heading licinins half-wav down the straight, only just lasted long enough to beat L.ciiiius, which finished on under punishment.. Pelham finished well in third place just in front, of Set Sail and Black Cat, both of which may do bettor later. Racing concluded with the Ruapehu Hack, and of the twenty-two starter: Ohui claimed the largest following, but Polyphemus and Dal Eaton were , each well supported.. The three horses named all began well and were in the leading position, ns the field raced on io the. course proper. Ohui soon afterwards retired and Polyphemus drew out to win in convincing style. Til a, great, race for second, place Bon March just beat Kingbroney and Mime, with Dal Eaton. Bevis and .Toy Bird all in the firing' line. THE “TOTE" IN FRANCE.
