AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
TO-MORROW ’ S CARNIVAL. Another monthly sports meeting, conducted by the Hawera Amateur Athletic Club, will be held on the Showgrounds to-morrow evening, commencing at seven o'clock. The first hour will be devoted to field events and then will follow a heavy programme ol sprinting, distance running, cycling, hurdling, and high jumping, while there will be tyre races for the younger competitors. The .Hawera Aluni cipal Band has again kindly consented to provide the musical part of the programme. In numbers and quality the nominations in the respective events are all that can he desired. The 50 yards dash handicap will be the first short- sprint run this .season, and will fini*sh in front ot tne main stand. Patrons should .see some good breaking away from the mark and also some clo.se finishing in this race, which has been divided into three heats. Shore and Gilliver arc on the two yards mark, while Weir on two and a, half yards, should be able to make good time if he produces his old starting form. L. Hunt- has five yards of a handicap and will perhaps prove one of the most dangerous in the field. • Quick starting and rapid action are deciding features in a race of this length, and Shore Bros., -M. Gray, and Gilliver are competitors who have bad some experience that should prove useful. S. Shore has been placed on II yards in the 220 yards’ handicap, and in view of his splendid run on Boxing Day at Wellington, when he ran in second in good time, he would appear to have to-morrow’s race of this length secure. M. Gray on 18 yards must also- stand a good chance, while' J. Beauchamp (25), 1. Richards, and Hooper Bros., are others, who should show up at the finish. Riichards (22) should be a good outsider.
The 603 yards and the mile running events are well filled and it is more than likely that Philip -and Clark will fight out some very good finishes. The cycling events arc sure to be interesting. Griffin is on scratch and is set some very difficult handicaps to race against. The further the distance the better for Griffin, so that in the three -miles he -should, as usual, get up close to the fields and may; perhaps win. R-. Wells is nicely handicapped, especially in the mile and a half. Stening Bros, Tippet Bros., and T. Lay should also show out ■prominently, while Mulhallv should repeat ' his previous performance and combine in good finishes. Hughes has been placed on scratch and Toby Peters lia.s been given If) yards. Both of these hoys are showing promising form. ytan Bay. who put up .such a remarkable throw with! the javelin at the last carnival, will endeavour to improve his record of 105 ft. Sins. He only needs to do six and a half feet better, to break the New Zealand record. [f lie reproduces his efforts at the hast championships, Claude Shore will justify his being placed scratch in the hop, step and jump. It will he remembered that he did 41 feet on that occasion. 0. E. Falkner lias definitely decided to .start in the half-mile walk, his favourite distance. He is considered the equal of Harry Kerr, having put up some really astonishing times over the short distances.
Patrons are assured of a very pleasant evening’s entertainment and only one shilling is being charged for admission. In view of the -big carnival in a fortnight’s time, when the world’s champion athletes will be competing, to-morrow evening’s carnival should give everyone an opportunity to -sum up the chances of the various local athletes when pitted against the champions.
