♦ Roy. L. N. Barnes, who recently came to Hawexa to act as curate to St. Mary’s Church, lias received advice that he has in examination completed his 8.. A. degree. Rev. H. W. Monaghan, vicar of St. Mary’s, Hawera, has returned front a short motor tour to Pahiatua and district. He reports having had an in-; teresting time, and! that the country en route looks well, though very dry towards Hawke’s Bay. Mr. S'. Death, of Kaponga, who has been an inmate of the .Hawera Public Hospital for several weeks, expects to be able' to leave* this institution in the near future, but will he unable to resume his ordinary vocation for some time. As. a parishioner of St. Mark’s Church, lvaponga, Mr. Death has been actively associated with its various activities and has earned the esteem of the church members, by whom an appeal for assistance to Mr, Death in his present trouble is being organised. A recent social held for this purpose was attended with good results, and on Tuesday .a further function, in the form of a euchre party and dance is. to be held in the parish hall. A small charge for admission i>s being made, and in order that the full benefit of the proceeds will be reaped, the hall, supper and musical services are being provided gratis. Those responsible' for organising the benefit trust that it will be well supported and that its re-, suite will be of material assistance to Mr. Death. With the Imperial Press delegates who toured the Dominion recently was one from Malta, Signor Bartallo, a native of that place, and owner and editor of the leading paper. He is a most scholarly man, and besides his journalistic Avork lias qualified as a barrister, and; is a Doctor of Laws. While- Die delegation was in Wellington, iSerget.-Major Bezar called on him and Avas most courteously and presented Avitli a complete history of the island its people Avritten by the Doctor himself. Ik is a most eomprehenstee volume and very valuable indeed, and is much prized by its recipient.
