GOLF
St. Briac, where I played several rounds of- golf last summer (says a writer in the Sunday Chronicle) is a haunt of retired generals. There is a story being told there to illustrate this w'hich is worth quoting. A man walked up to a stranger there and asked whether he would care to have a round of golf. “Do you know who I am,”, retorted the other, pompously. “I am a Major-General , K.CU3., 0.M.G.” “Oh, that’s all right,” said the first man laughing. “You must be a newcomer. Everyone is a.t least a brigadier here. Why, if it comes to that, I am a Lieutenant-General myself.” And he was. A ball that has played golf all round tihe world is the. proudest possession of Mr. I. O. Upborn (says an exchange). It [was a bet of fifty dollars'that started Mr. Upham teeing-up in foreign countries playing one hole on every course with the same ball. At Tsingtau disaster nearly overtook him. His ball rolled into a. ditch, hut after twelve men had looked for it, it was found two hundred feet away from the place where it. had disappeared. The day Avar Avas declared, Mr. Upham played on the Hermitage Park course in 'Copenhagen, ’where the chief hazards AA'ere deer, which had to he shooed oif the putting greens. Next day he went back for another game and found the entire park occupied by the Danish mobilised army, 10,00 .strong. At Briac Hills, outside of Edinburgh, he Av.as able to iplay until ten o’clock in the evening without losing his ball. Before returning to Sail Eranc-soo, Mr. Upham had played on fifty courses.
