CAROL’S LOVE AFFAIRS.

A WOMAN OF MYSTERY. CAUSE OF HIS ABDICATION. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT LONDON, Jan. 6. Europe continues to be intrigued by the story- of Prince Carol, who has renounced his succession to the Roumanian throne, especially the report that Princess Helene is journeying to Milan for a final interview. Apartments have been reserved at the same hotel at which Prince Caro l and Mad ame Lupescu are staying. Lady Drummond Hay, cabling to the Daily Express from Milan, says neither lovers can be seen, but the writer received a message from Madame Lupescti in her own forceful handwriting, ng: “I am not in a position t<know the reasons which actuated the Prince in his action, and I am in no way responsible for that action.” The Prince wrote: “I cannot tell what my plans are for the good reason that I have got none.” Neither Prince Carol nor Madame Lupescu have left their rooms for a week except to visit each other. Their jnly amusements were a gramaphone. cards and newspapers. Madame Lupescu is a divorcee, aged 28. She is of medium height and is Hump, confirming the theory- that history has never been made by thin women. She is white-skinned and is not ctt.v. but is attractive. She is the daughter of a Jewish commission agent in Bucharest. Roumanian newspapers continue to emphasise the political aspect of the affair, but it becomes clearer that Madame Lupescu has been the driving newer of Prince Carol’s impetuous action. Reports from Bucharest via Vienna state that Princess Helene declines to assent to a divorce. She says Prince Caro 1 is only being swayed by a passim infatuation. Nobody knows the real identity of Madame Lupescu. It is commonly reoorted that the name is a pseudonym. Other reports say that she is already seeking a divorce* from her husband in aider to marry Prince Carol.
