LOVE AND POLITICS
ROUMANIAN SENSATION. ■ A PRINCE’S RENUNCIATION. H RECENT AIRCRAFT DEAL. H BY CABLE--PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGI^B LONDON, Jan. 3.H The cause of Prince Charles’ -renuH ciation remains a mystery so far direct information goes, but indicate that serious political eiices aie factors as well as love fairs. H A Berlin message says that .according! to a report from Budapest M. BratH ani (Premier) lias tendered his tion. H Vienna reports that the air is with rumours about the reasons for 'tli® resignation of the Prince. 'One mor® probable than the rest is that he cam® into conflict with the Gove because recently a number of officers were * sentenced by a. court® martin.’ for buying useless aircraft Holland.,- The Prince protested a gainful the sentences. Ever since 1918 he ha® hacj deep political differences with hi® parents and M. Bratiani. H CABINET RESIGNS. ■ CHARGE AGAINST WAR MINISTEIB BERLIN, Jan. 2. I The resignation of M. Madaresco® Roumanian War Minister, is an® nounced. He has been publicly accuse® of irregularities in dealing with th® Dutch Fokker aeroplane concern. Th® name of Prince Charles is coupled wit® his. Parliament has been eummone® for Monday, and revelations are exH pected. ■ BUCHAREST, Jan. 3. ■ M. Bratiani’s Cabinet has resigned.® PURCHASE OF AEROPLANES. AN UNLUCKY CHOICE. I THE PRINCE’S LOVE AFFAIRS. I LONDON. Jan. 2. ;® The Bucharest correspondent of the® Daily Express states that Prinocß Charles, the Crown Prince of Rou-I mania, who has renounced his right of® succession to the throne of that coun-fl try, is believed to be in Venice at pres-l ent. One reason advanced for his re-1 nunciation is that he wishes .to re-® marry, for which reason he seeks al divorce from his present wife. This hel would be unable to do while he re-1 mained heir to the throne. I The Prince, in a letter to the King,l undertakes not to return to Roumaniaß for 6ix years. It is generally supposed® that the Prince is anxious to remarry® Zizi Lambrino, to whom he is greatly® attached. I The Daily Telegraph correspondent® states that well-informed diplomatic® quarters assert that the renunciation® is not so closely associated with the® Prince’s morganatic marriage as is® popularly supposed. The correspondent! gathers that the action was more im-l mediately determined, or at any ratel precipitated, by events of a political! and administrative character. Recently! the question of equipping the Ron-1 manian air force with new ’planes was! under consideration. Certain depart-! ments were intent on purchasing the! machines from a certain Power, and'! the Prince, being the titular head of! the service, disagreed. He eventually! imposed his will, and accordingly the! machines were ordered from another! country. I It apnears that the choice was dogged! by misfortune. One of the pilots was! killed during tests, while other ma-fl chines proved to contain unsuitable en-fl gines. The thwarted authorities sought! to make capital of the incidents, urg-l ing an official inquiry. This the Prince! strongly opposed, hut Cabinet over-l ruled his objections and ordered an in-1 quirv. These circumstances '•'ontributedl in no small degree to the Prince’s re-?! signation of the post of air commander-! in-chief, together with the royal prerogatives. The engagement of Prince Charles and Princess Helene of Greece took place in November, 1918. The Daily Chronicle correspondent, who was at Lucerne at the time, says the couple appeared to be happy lovers. He often met them walking by the side of the lake or crossing the hills, and always they were arm-in-arm. It is difficult, for those who saw them to believe that; the renunciation is associated with matrimonial differences. Reports from Bucharest state' that the Prince should have returned there after attending the funeral of Queen Alexandra, but he went to Switzerland, whence he wrote to the King renouncing his right to succession and Beclin-; ing to return. The Crown Council met on Friday, those present including members of Cabinet, political and the patriarch, and' they discussed! the question of a regency in the event of the King’s death, also the interference of Prince Charles against, the Government in political affairs. A' Minister (M. Hiott). who went to Swit-i zerland in order to induce the Prince to change his mind, has returned withi a definite written renunciation. It is feared complications may arise i Inter from a possible pretender to the throne, namely, the Prince’s son by Zizi Lambrino, a Moldavian girl, whom he married before his marriage to Princess Helene.
