BIG BUSH FIRES.

♦ SMOKE ENVELOPS MELBOURNE. BY CABLE-PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. MELBOURNE, Jan. 3. The city is enveloped in a dense haze from bush iires, which are raging in the Tvnong, Gorfield and Berwick districts in Gippsland. The fires commenced on Thursday and extended until within thirty-four miles of Melbourne. At one time Tvnong was in danger of being enveloped. The fires caused a weird effect in the city, smoke being blown right across, the sun through the haze presenting a deep orange colour. ’The smoke was so thick that it threw unlighted places into deep shadow. Heavy damage has boon caused.
