SHIPS HELD UP.
SAILINGS DELAYED. FIREMEN AND OTHER TROUBLES. IJY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. SYDNEY, Jan. 1. When the Maheno was due to sail at ten o’clock yesterday morning for Wellington a number of firemen were absent ami did not return until some hours later. The vessel sailed at 4.30 p.m. The Maunganui, which was timed to sail for Auckland at three o’clock, was delayed owing to the absence of certain* papers, which had to be takerdown the harbour to where the ship anchored. She finally cleared port at (5.30. The Tahiti was ready to sail for San Francisco via Wellington at noon, when the crew threw a rope ladder over the side and left the ship. This was a sudden development of previous troubles on Christmas Day, when the crew alleged that they were not sufficiently catered for to enable them to celebrate the day fittingly. The Tahiti was then anchored awaiting a settlement of the dispute. The Tahiti eventually sailed at eleven o’clock last night after being held up all the afternoon, several conferences between the crew and the management having proved abortive. How a settlement was eventually reached has not yet transpired.
