NEW DEFENCE SCHEME. A CITIZEN FORCE ON COMMANDO SYSTEM. BY CABLE —PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. (Received Jan. 2, 10.30 a.m.) CAPETOWN, Jan. 1. Colonel F. H. P. CressweJl, Minister for Defence for the Union of South Africa, has outlined his new defence scheme. It includes the abolition of the famous South African Mounted Rifles, the existing permanent force, the personnel of which is to be absorbed into the police force. The air force is to be increased. The active citizen force is to he continued, with six batteries of artillery and 12 battalions of infantry. A modification of the old commando system will be adopted.—A. and N.Z. Assn.
