When the cruiser Chatham steamed into Plymouth Sound a few days tgo she ended a career of great usefu’ness as a unit of the British Navy Her lieriod of duty as an active warship being over, she is now to follow in the long |ine of many distinguished predecessors and be prepared for the sale list. The Chatham lias returned from blast Indies, where she has been ucee.ded as the flagship of Vice-Admiral H. W. itichmond, Commander-tn-Chief of the station, by the Effingham. She is to lie paid off at Devonport. ()n her way to Plymouth, ’he Chatham made an exciting dash through heavy weather to assist a tug whi h was reported in distress off Cape Fillister re. Before she reached the spot, however, information was received inat the tug was under way and did not iiied assistance. Afterwards the Chatham called at Vigo.
