HOME TEAM BAT FIRST. ADELAIDE, Dec. 27. In perfect weather and on a fast wicket with a moderate attendance, South Australia met the New Zealand cricketers. The local men won the toss and decided to bat. Hope and Cunningham, the opening bowlers, caused an early disaster, three wickets falling for eight runs. Rymill and A. Richardson stopped the rot, scoring freely off both bowlers, 50 coming up in 38 minutes. Rymill was brilliant, and reached 50 in 49 minutes. The partnership realised 84 in 84 minutes. Arthur Richardson, who was quiet before lunch, brightened after and added 20, when Hope bowled him. He had been in a hundred minutes .for 77 and hit seven fours. He batted brightly. The board showed five for 162 and the local position seemed insecure. Murray was not confident. McKay and Alexander, two university youths, were then associated. Both were confident. Alexander gave a particularly fine display, timing well and scoring freely in all directions. The Visitors bowled accurately and preon ted liberties being taken. The visitors were, alert in the field, but' their throwing in was poor. Alexander was dropped off Cunningham when 29. Thereafter he batted faultlessly and passed 50 in 57 minutes. The .scoring had been ’brisk, 200 going up in 134 minutes. When 31 McKay was bowled fey a no-ifeall. Alloo was the fifth bowler tried, and in his second over he broke the partnership, McKay feeing caught brilliantly fey Dacre off Alloo. The young batsman had shaped well. The partnership realised 70 in 40 minutes. Alexander, who is a. youth of 18 was cheered on reaching 79, the top score. He ran to the nineties, by crisp strokes. After uhe tea adjournment Alexander reached hiis century, taking 131 minutes, and lie was heartily applauded. Shortly after three hundred went up in 204 minutes.
The visitors’’ fielding had deteriorated, and as ia result the scoring rate was accelerated, the score mounting rapidly. Grimmett, former New Zealander, made an eighth wicket stand with Alexander. Both scored freely, and the partnership realised 98 in 72 minutes. Alexander was run out when he had readied 130, made in brilliant style. He was in for 176 minutes and hit five fours. Ckimmeth was then dismissed, and soon after the innings closed for 351, representing a good recovery. Alloo was the most .successful bowler, hut Hope and * Cunningham bowled well.
Blunt and Worker opened for. New Zealand, and had made 20 when stumps were drawn. ,
