THE JEWS AND JESUS

“A GREAT MORAL LEADER.” NEW YORK RABBI’S DECLARATION WORDS SHARPLY CRITICISED. BY CABLE —PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. (Received Dec. 28, 12.15 p.m.) NEW YORK, Dec. 27. Rabbi Stephen Wise, New York’s Jewish leader, shook Judaism to its foundations this week when he declared that Jesus was a great moral and ethical leader. So sharp was the criticism of the Rabbi from all corners of America that he offered to resign the chairmanship of the United Palestine Relief Fund. Wealthy Jewish friends rallied to his side, but’that failed to stem the tide of discussion, and the Jewish communities in many cities are sharply divided a.s to what stand they should take. Rabbi Gump, of Providence, agrees with Rabbi Wise that Christ is not a myth, but an ethical light which Judaism gave to the world. —Sun.
