THE HAWERA TOURNAMENT.

GOOD WEATHER AN D FINE FL.\X. A*SUCOESBFUL OPENING. Fortune in every way lias isaniled on the arrangenieiiits for the tournament arranged by the Hawera Lawn 'tennis Club committee, the outstanding event in the tennis world of the district. For the opening on Saturday the weather was perfect, except for the wind during part of tiie day, and the courts were in capital order and all played well. The entries were very large, and comprised pi aye us from many centres in tiie.North Island. Play on the whole was very good and there were many close contests and line finishes. The arrangements made by the committee were excellent and reflect the greatest credit on all concerned, for the work entailed not only a- great deal of good organisation, but also much attention to detail, and both were there, meaning that all went off without a hitch. For this the members of the committee, the president (Mr. J. M. Go Hi ns) the lion, secretary (Mr. M. It. Jones), his (assistant (Mr. G. J. Belton) and all ethers helping are responsible, and they are to be congratulated on the success achieved for their first day. Duning the day morning and afternoon tea and luncheon were supplied by the croquet ladies’ committee, and these arrangements were much appreciated. Nine courts were in use, parts o f the croquet lawn having teen requisitioned, and they all, especially the latter and the top courts, played especially well. There was a very good attendance of spectators watching the play on Saturday, and again to-day a good number burned out and all much appreciated the display. The prettily situated lawns, with the sloping banks between the upper and lower courts, lent- themselves admirably to a tournament. Lt was a gay and busy scene presented on the courts, with the continual movement of the; white flannelled men and the varied colours of the lady players, against the soft green background. Practically alii the first round matches were played on Saturday, and to-day saw a large number of players eliminated from the various competitions. Tomorrow the interest will quicken as eemi-finails and finals are reached.
