, N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS. PLAY AT CHRISTCHURCH. SOME FIRST-DAY SURPRISES. (by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 27. The New Zealand tennis championship meeting commenced on Saturday morning on the United Club’s courts. The weather was brilliantly clear after rain on Christmas Day, and the courts were true and hard. A light nor wester did not develop sufficiently to interfere with play, but the day was oppressively hot and this probably accounted for the fact that play generally was a little below expectations. The first two rounds of the men’s championships singles were completed, leaving sixteen men in. The two surprises of the meeting were the dctca* of Page, formerly of Auckland, by Aitken, Canterbury’s sixth man, and the defeat of Noel Wilson, Wellington’s first man, by E. B. W. Smyth, who has practised mostly on hard courts in Dunedin. The Auckland champion, Griffiths, went down to Wallace (Taranaki), while Lowry appeared to great disadvantage against Peacock, who forced him into constant errors. There were no other notable casualties except Greenwood, Canterbury’s third man, who was completely nonplussed by Len Prance’s heavily chopped game. Ollivier, who has been regarded as an' uncertainty, only lost two games against Knotty, of Auckland. Bartleet and V. Seay liad an easy passage, and Haege, the Victorian, did not have a real try-out. Although he revealed a line forehand drive, a decisive smash and a quickly flicked backhand, he was a little bit unreliable. In the ladies’ championship the biggest surprise of the meeting was the defeat of Miss Cato (Hawke’s Bay) by an almost unknown suburban player. Miss Reed, who simply lias a heavy forehand chop and nothing else. Miss Wylc’s defeat of Miss Marion MacFarlane was not expected, as she is a very cool player. Auckland’s first ladies, Miss Marjorie MacFarlane and Miss Knight, won by default, and Miss Spiers only lost one game in her singles and three games altogether during the day, including two ladies’ doubles. Mrs. Scott (nee McLaren), on the other hand, had hard work in boating Miss Perrier (Canterbury’s fifth lady.
