THE WELLINGTON FIRE.
LOSS ESTIAIATED AT £20,000,
(by TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Dee. 24., _ The fire in- the Wellington Fruit Exchange did considerable damage. It broke out- in the three-storey building occupied by Thompson Bros. On the top floor is Byron Brown’s crockery store, and it was apparently m this that the fire started. It was not tiU 10 p.m. that the brigade succeeded in entirely suppressing the blaze. The roof and top storey were burned out. and water deluged! the remainder o± the building. - .. „ Thompson Bros.’ stock of confectionery fancy goods, etc., was l practically ruined by water and smoke. In the basement there was a large stock ot provisions, which suffered severely, and in the. Fruit Exchange oranges and potatoes, etc., were damaged. The loss is estimated at more than £20,000. A large quantity of cherries and other fruit from Sydney had just been cleared or the loss would have been still greater.
