This afternoon the streets were thronged with a joyous and happy crowd, and brisk business was reported by the retailers. The streets had been decorated with greenery and streamers, and jmesented a gay appearance. The finishing touches to the decorations wei’e to be done this morning, and tredesmen were out early with this object in view. All the shops will observe an extra, late night this evening, and it is expected that there will be a large crowd in town.
A. verdict of accidental death, no blnmei being attachable to anyone, was returned at the inquest on the death of Gladys May O’Dea, who died as a' result of being struck by a motor car driven by Mr T. 11. Lovegrove at New Plymouth, on Monday. The jury extended its sympathy to the parents of both victims and to the driver of the car. The Herald reports that the other child, Doreen Walsh, died in hospital yesterday.
Members of one of the infant classes at the Sydenham School will have good cause to remember the breaking-up ceremony last week —the teacher went away and forgot to dismiss the class. The teacher left the room at. about the end of the ceremony says a Christchurch paper, and did . not come back. Sounds of departing .school-mates had faded, and quietness surrounded the room.
