CARE OF BABIES.

PLUNKEir SOCIETY CONFERENCE.

(BY" TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) DUNEDIN, Dec. 3. The Dominion conference of the Plunket Society was resumed this morning. A Christchurch remit urging the establishment of a chair ,of child welfare was supported enthusiastically. Sir Truby King stressed the vital need for interesting (medical istudents in the work, and on his suggestion a subcommittee was appointed to put the matter before the Otago University Council.

Mr. J. A. Young, M.P. lor Hamilton, said the establishment of the chair was a national duty. The medical school at Dunedin was the only possible place for its establishment, and lie hoped that some public-spirited citizen would finance the project. Such a chair would .sweep away much of the prejudice to the society’s work which had come from the medical profession.

Sir Trutby King said that the -time for the establishment of such .a chair was long past, and it should be putbefore the university authorities and the Government immediately. Regarding a clause in the remit that the chair would assist in the finding of a successor to himself when the time Came, he said that he had considered the matter. So far he had not been able to find an understudy, but he was optimistic of doing so. The sub-committee will interview the university authorities and report before tbe conference ends, We-llingiton and Gisborne remits urged a change in the patterns for. a ibaibv’s clothes at present distributed on the grounds that they were of wrong sizes for children of various ages. The matter was referred to a sub -oo mm it tee.

The conference approved of a Diargaville remit asking that the Government should exempt the society from stamp duties on receipts and cheques. A Geraldine remit urging the Government to see that flour more nutritious than the -present white flour was made available was referred to the Health Department.
