MANAIA.

(From Our Own Correspondent)

SUCCESSFUL EFFORT.

The Ladies’ Patriotic Committee of Alanaia is to be highly congratulated on the splendid effort on Tuesday. So’ far the sum raised for the invalided soldiers in hospitals for Christmas Cheer amounts to over £46, and some more may come in. This 'is a practical instance that the Manaia Ladies’ Patriotic Society has not forgotten the men who are invalids through th© Great War, and is endeavouring to give them little extra cheer for Christmas. The guessing competition, weight *of a lamb, was won by Mrs G. Meuli. and Mr D. Bashford, with 411 lbs, the correct weight. PRESENTATION. A pleasant evening was spent at the Alethodist Church on Wednesday last, when a. good number of friends gathered for the purpose of entertaining Miss D. M. Patterson.' After a short musical programme and a number of games, brief speeches were made by Messrs H. J. Berry, S. J. Bennett, R. Gibson, O. Parry, Rev. C. Roberts, Mrs Bennett and Miss M. Young, the speakers thanking Miss Patterson for her work, extending over many years, and wishing her much happiness in the future. On behalf of the choir, Air Parry presented Miss Patterson with a wellbound cony of the church hymn book, representing the W.C.T.U., with which Miss Patterson has been so long associated ; Mrs S. J. Bennett gave the guest of the evening a handsome Bible, while the congregation’s gift was a beautiful gold wristlet watch, presented by Air Roberts.

Miss Patterson replied, thanking the friends for their great kindness. She felt she did not deserve the kind things that had been said. The presents were just what she would like, and she would prize them very highly as reminders of her association with the church in Alanaia.
