ROSE BUD CARNIVAL. SPORTS COMMITTEE WINS. (From Our Own Correspondent). The Rose Bud Carnival, in aid of the Eltham Soldiers’ eluded last night, when the magmycen sum of £502 15s lid wa s handed in h> the three committees, the amounts be-
The results were announced at the steps of the Council Changers by tlie Mayor, Mr I. J- Bridger (who i s also chairman of the Soldiers Memonnl Committee). He afterwards visited the picture- entertainment which had been given free by the Borough Council, and again announced the results, calling o three cheers for the Sports Committee and the winning Rose Bud, Darcy Des Forces. He also called for cheer s foi the "two other committees. He said that the result was a pleasant surprise to the Memorial Committee who had set out to raise £3OO by this. method of the carnival. Its anticipations had been exceeded by over £2OO. The carnival had meant a lot of hard work anil the money had been earned rather than collected/ The people had had plenty of fun and many chances of winning something. He thanked the three com--oittees, which, he said, had worked so harmoniously and energetically tor the success of the carnival; also the peop e o-enerallv for their generous support of this appeal. Mr Bridger said he would like to pay a tribute to the returned soldiers who had worked on tlie various committees. They coukl have been excused for not assisting, considering their war service, but they wanted, to assist aud did assist in a veiy effective manner. He also thanked the Hawera Municipal Band for its programme, the “Magpies” for their concert, the Borough Council and also the Press for its assistance. - . Concluding, he said it would now be possible for the committee to erect the memorial gates, and thus remove the reproach the town had been under so long. Hie total in hand was £672, with sortie promises to come in. Mr S. Dunbar, chairman of The Sports Committee, also spoke. He thanked the people for tlieir very generous assistance and the members of his committee for tlieir energy and work. He was pleased with the result of the apneal, and hoped the gates would soon he erected.
