The Harbour Board has carried a resolution, moved by the chairman, to eliminate compulsory contracts from its policy and t-o entrust the remaining sections of the first instalments of its work to the engineering staff, to he carried out by day labour. GISBOIRNE SUPREME COURT. GISBORNE, Nov. 30. A t the Supremo Gnu lit the Grand Jury returned true bill in all cases except that of George Smith, a Maori, and Hoani Kohuru, alleged carnal knowledge, in which no bills were returned. DAY'S TAKINGS STOLEN. ASHBURTON, Nov. 30. A tliief entered the home of C. Hulton, a fruiterer, and stole £'l9 from a bag containing the day’s takings, which had been left on the kitchen table. Access was obtained through a casement window.
